Root to Rise: thoughts on grounding

What’s the deal when a yoga teacher says, “root to rise”?

As a physical cue in an asana practice, this means that you root down with the security of the ground beneath you, and use this point of contact to rise up to stand or lift your body. It’s about a strong foundation.

Asana, the physical practice of yoga, is just one of eight limbs of yoga’s limitless spiritual teachings. “Root to rise” is a beautiful example of how your practice on the mat translates to how you show up in your life.

The root Chakra is often associated with a strong foundation. When you’re rooted, you are firmly planted. You’re supported. You’re literally grounded. If you experience this sense of security in yourself, you can begin to turn your attention to your inner world with more objectivity. You can watch your experiences, and as you’re firmly planted in your grounded reality, growth can occur. Not to mention, with a stable root, it’s a lot harder to be knocked down.

With a deep root, you can become unwavering; swaying, without falling. While uncertainty about what’s next can feel scary, the wisdom of your grounded self offers constant stability. Your feet are on the ground; you’re here; you’re okay.

Let’s get grounded! Below is a gentle mindfulness practice to get you into your foundation.

Come to an easy seat on the ground, and find a long, straight spine - you might lean against a wall for extra support, or sit on a pillow to elevate your hips. Let your hands come to rest anywhere on your body with your palms facing down - maybe on your lap/knees, or maybe over your heart. Try a few options to discover what’s best in the moment!

Begin to notice the parts of your body that make contact with the earth beneath you. Imagine roots growing from your sit bones, and extending deep into the ground. With this connectedness, you might lift the top of your head a bit higher towards the sky, picturing your spine growing longer.

Breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth, taking lots of time to fully expand and contract. As you breathe, visualize yourself enveloped in a soft, red, velvet cloak of safety. Experiment with using the mantra: I let go of fear, knowing the universe fully supports me.
